Roles and defensive prompts

Separate operations by what they actually access and do, not connector names. A connector may offer both internal reads and writes. Research should have fresh minimal context, exact read tools, and no shell, shared filesystem, archive, memory mutation, configuration, or delegation. Inspect custom roles and opaque agents without assuming their names enforce these restrictions. Main mediates exchanges between researchers and sends only a focused question, permitted sources, limits, and expected evidence. Public questions omit private identifiers, internal locations, customer data, and internal findings; ask the owner if a useful non-sensitive question cannot be formed.

Actual configuration surfaces

Use the resolved assistant directory from runtime context; do not assume the working directory is the assistant home. Inspect its AGENTS.md, agents/<name>/AGENTS.md, and skills/configuration-hardening/ plus relevant configured skill sources. Do not substitute Fleet memory paths, tool manifests, connection blocks, or sharing blocks.

  • get_agent_tools supplies agents for the calling graph, latest_agents for the latest graph, saved_changes_inactive, and current_turn_uses_previous_graph. Use exact tool identities and available attachment metadata. Null tool lists mean uninspected capabilities. A selectable tool is not necessarily attached.
  • Local agent tools frontmatter contains exact persistent tool names. An empty list grants no selected tools; omission may inherit tools for ordinary custom agents. Preserve explicit lists for research. task(tools=[...]) adds available tools for that invocation only. Attaching a tool to research does not itself remove it from main: verify both roles and report any unsupported removal instead of claiming exclusive placement.
  • get_mcp_configuration returns a redacted server view and revision. Filter strings may be redacted too: inspect effective tool identities through get_agent_tools. Never bypass redaction with filesystem reads.
  • update_mcp_server(server_name, server, expected_revision) replaces one whole server. Preserve unrelated fields and same-field <redacted> placeholders; omitted fields are removed. Use environment references for new credentials, never literal secrets. On revision conflict, reread and reconcile with the approved change. Connections can execute commands or send credentials to destinations; include any change of command, destination, or access in the approval scope. If redaction prevents a safe proposal, leave it for the operator.
  • MCP edits activate only after successful next-turn reload. Local definition edits require reload_subagent_configuration; a reloaded response says next_turn. Skill or main-prompt edits are not proven active by an attachment inventory: use the supported refresh/restart mechanism and verify separately, or report them pending.

Use these existing mechanisms only when available. Do not invent a role manifest, approval editor, migration framework, or public-only retrieval backend. Packaging backfills missing default files without overwriting existing user files; an existing main prompt may therefore need an explicitly reviewed update to add the ongoing-review trigger.

Verification and rollback

Capture safe before/after attachment metadata and the MCP revision where available; do not invent a universal active revision. Verify the latest role tool sets against the approved matrix. saved_changes_inactive must be false for selected attachment changes. If current_turn_uses_previous_graph is true, say the current turn still has old tools and verify from the next turn before claiming it has changed. A failed reload retains the previous graph; saved and active state can differ. Preserve the failure in the report and repair or restore only within the approved scope.

Use list_subagents to inspect background work. Running tasks retain original capabilities until completion or cancellation; cancel_subagent requires applicable authorization. Restore approved previous non-secret role edits through the same validation/reload path. Restore MCP fields through the revision-checked store without exporting credentials. Rollback that restores removed capabilities is an expansion and belongs in the confirmation scope.

For unchanged configuration, keep the review read-only and reuse unresolved decisions. Stop when selected changes are verified or explicitly report the concrete pending/failed work. Deferred advisory objectives are not blockers.

Enforcement and residual risks

Exact attached tools and fresh context provide runtime restrictions only where verified. Existing HITL gates provide execution approval only where actually configured. Prompt instructions and conversational confirmation are behavioral defenses, not new execution gates.

Main retains filesystem access, and any shell access can bypass tool separation or modify trusted state. Research output can carry indirect injection back to main. Tool classification can be mistaken; web tools are not guaranteed to reach public destinations only. Agents share the runtime rather than isolated hosts or credential stores. These are operator-managed residual risks; report them without claiming prompts eliminate them.

Inventory sends, publishing, uploads, deletes, bulk operations, production changes, permission changes, and configuration changes where relevant. Record known existing approvals or unknown/missing controls, and recommend operator action. Never edit HITL/Ask through this skill. Keep hardening records minimal and local, excluding secret values, source bodies, and sensitive query arguments.
